When the AC is old
Angi puts the life of a central air conditioner at 12 to 15 years, and American Standard gives the same range. CBS News says many last 15 to 20 years. If yours is near the end of that range, or repairs keep coming back, see AC replacement. If you are not sure, say so in the details box. Detroit's cooling season is short (847 cooling degree days a year versus 6,067 heating), so the AC may sit idle for most of the year.

Common questions
Why is my AC running but not getting cold?
Trane lists these common reasons: a clogged air filter, a clogged condensate drain line, a dirty condenser coil, a frozen evaporator coil, low refrigerant, and thermostat problems. You can check the filter and thermostat yourself. Refrigerant, coils and drains are work for an HVAC professional.

What are some reasons why my AC is not cooling?
The U.S. Department of Energy's list of common air conditioner problems includes: low or leaking refrigerant, a thermostat that needs new batteries or replacing, worn electrical controls for the compressor and fan, leaking or clogged ducts, a clogged drain, and a dirty filter that restricts airflow. For refrigerant or electrical problems it says to contact a trained technician.
Why is my AC blowing air but not getting colder?
Check the thermostat first. Trane says to make sure it is set to cool (not bumped to heat), that the set temperature is below the current room temperature, and that the fan is on AUTO. With the fan on ON, the system blows unconditioned air even when the AC is not running. If that does not fix it, a dirty filter, dirty condenser coil or low refrigerant are the usual next suspects.

Who should I call to fix my AC unit?
A company with a Michigan mechanical contractor's license with a refrigeration and air conditioning classification. The state requires a license to install, alter or service HVAC equipment, with an exception for an owner doing work on their own single-family home. Ask for the license number and check it. This site is not a contractor.
Why is my AC unit frozen?
Trane says dirt on the indoor evaporator coil or a dirty filter can restrict airflow and make the coil frost over. If you see ice on the coil, turn the system off and contact an HVAC professional. Do not chip the ice. Low refrigerant is another cause that needs a technician.

What is the $5,000 rule for AC?
Multiply the unit's age in years by the repair estimate. Over $5,000, replacement is often considered; under $5,000, repairing may make more sense. For example, a 12-year-old AC with a $500 repair scores $6,000. CBS News and Angi both describe it as a starting point, not a final answer. Angi also suggests thinking about replacement if repairs would cost more than half the price of a new unit.
