AC tune-up too
The same idea applies to cooling. ENERGY STAR and the Department of Energy both say to check the air conditioner in the spring, before summer, and the furnace in the fall. If you want both looked at, mention that in the details box. Contractors get busy once summer and winter arrive, so the off-season is the easier time to schedule.

Common questions
What is typically included in a furnace tune-up?
ENERGY STAR's list for a heating and cooling check-up: check thermostat settings, tighten electrical connections and measure voltage and current on motors, lubricate moving parts, check the condensate drain, check the controls and the starting cycle, and for heating, check gas connections, gas pressure, burner combustion and the heat exchanger. Trane's list for a gas furnace adds checking that the flue or vent is clear and sound, cleaning the burners and flame sensor, and inspecting and cleaning the blower and blower motor.

How often should you have furnace maintenance?
Once a year. ENERGY STAR recommends an annual pre-season check-up, and the U.S. Department of Energy says to have a furnace or heat pump professionally maintained each year. Angi says an HVAC system should be inspected and cleaned at least once a year, and preferably twice, before each major usage season.

When should you do a furnace tune-up?
In the fall, before heating season. ENERGY STAR says contractors get busy once summer and winter come, so it is best to check the cooling system in the spring and the heating system in the fall. The Department of Energy's guide says the same: air conditioners in the spring, furnaces in the fall.

What can I do myself between visits?
ENERGY STAR says to inspect, clean or change the air filter about once a month in a furnace or central air conditioner, because a dirty filter can raise energy costs and damage equipment. Angi says to change a furnace filter at least every 90 days. DTE Energy also advises keeping furnace-room vents unblocked and appliance vents and air intakes clear, and having a professional deal with a pilot that goes out.

Is a furnace tune-up worth it?
The Department of Energy's guide says following a regular maintenance schedule can reduce heating and cooling costs by 5% to 10% and prolong the life of the equipment. Angi calls annual maintenance the most reliable way to prevent costly breakdowns. Those are general claims, not a promise for your furnace. A check-up can also catch safety issues such as the heat exchanger or gas connections.
